Ram Nath Kovind is the current President of India. He took office on July 25, 2017.
Ram Nath Kovind was born on October 1, 1945, in Paraukh village in the Kanpur Dehat district, Uttar Pradesh, India. He was one of five children born to a family of farmers. Kovind earned a Bachelor's degree in commerce from Kanpur University (now Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University) in 1965. He also earned a degree in law from DAV College in Kanpur in 1971.
Ram Nath Kovind began his political career as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was elected to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, in 1994 and served for two terms until 2006. Kovind was also a member of several parliamentary committees during his time as a Rajya Sabha member.
In 2015, Kovind was appointed the Governor of Bihar by the then President of India, Pranab Mukherjee. He served in this role until 2017, when he was elected as the President of India.
