Mathcounts is a national middle school mathematics competition that promotes math achievement through a series of challenging and engaging math problems. The competition is designed to inspire and challenge students with an interest in mathematics, as well as to encourage them to pursue further studies in mathematics and other STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields.
Mathcounts was founded in 1983 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and CNA Foundation. The first competition was held in 1984 in Ohio, with the goal of encouraging middle school students to pursue math and science. Today, Mathcounts has become a widely recognized program and competition, with more than 100,000 students participating annually across all 50 states and 6 U.S. territories.
The Mathcounts competition consists of four rounds: the Sprint Round, the Target Round, the Team Round, and the Countdown Round. The competition is designed to test students' speed, accuracy, and problem-solving skills, and to encourage teamwork and camaraderie among participants.
The Sprint Round consists of 30 multiple-choice questions that are to be completed in 40 minutes. The questions are designed to challenge students' problem-solving abilities and mathematical knowledge.
The Target Round consists of 8 problems, presented in pairs, which are to be completed in 6 minutes per pair. Students are allowed to use calculators for this round. This round is designed to test students' accuracy and problem-solving skills.
The Team Round consists of 10 problems that are to be completed in 20 minutes by a team of 4 students working together. The problems are designed to test students' ability to work collaboratively and to solve more complex problems than those presented in the individual rounds.
The Countdown Round is a fast-paced, head-to-head competition between the top 16 individuals. This round consists of questions that are presented one at a time, and the first student to correctly answer 3 questions is the winner.
Mathcounts poses many challenges to participants, including:
Mathcounts is a prestigious and challenging mathematics competition that helps students develop important skills in mathematics and problem solving. Through participation in Mathcounts, students can not only improve their mathematical abilities, but also gain confidence, build teamwork skills, and learn to enjoy the thrill of competition.
