The USS Laffey (DD-724) is a United States Navy destroyer that was named after Bartlett Laffey, a US Navy sailor who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Civil War. The ship was launched on October 21, 1943, and served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

History

During World War II, the Laffey saw action in the Pacific Theater, taking part in the Battle of Iwo Jima and the Battle of Okinawa. The ship was also used to escort convoys and to screen larger naval vessels during the war.

In the Korean War, the Laffey was part of a blockade force that prevented supplies from reaching North Korean forces. The ship also provided gunfire support for UN troops on several occasions. During the Vietnam War, the Laffey was used for anti-submarine warfare and provided naval gunfire support for American troops.

After its retirement from active duty in 1975, the Laffey was preserved as a museum ship and is currently berthed at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum in South Carolina.
